Summer 2024: CNACD Research Project

In summer 2024 the CNACD reached out to South Asian Catholics in the UK asking them to complete an anonymous survey. Responses highlighted that casteism continues within the UK.


Exactly 50% of respondents stated that they had witnessed someone being treated negatively in the UK because of their caste.


75% of respondents thought that UK political parties should be doing more to eradicate caste discrimination

When the responses of those who identified as a member of a caste and descent based group that is at risk of being discriminated against, the responses were even more concerning…


• 75% had heard someone in the UK make negative comments about a person’s caste.


• 68% had witnessed someone being treated negatively in the UK because of their caste.


• 57% had experienced discrimination/mistreatment (in the UK) because of their caste.


• 50% reported being treated negatively at work.


• 43% reported being treated negatively in shops or public spaces.


• 36% reported being treated negatively in educational facilities due to their caste (just over two thirds of this negative treatment coming from staff).


• 39% reported being treated negatively by healthcare providers.


• 21% reported being treated negatively in a place of prayer (mainly by the faith community rather than faith leaders).


• 36% reported being prevented from career progression/salary increases in the UK because of their caste.
